Hier ist das Maß seine nachhaltige Hinterlassenschaft.
Was haben wir bewegt? (Nicht "Wie groß ist unser Haus?")

i see it coming from far away
and it's getting closer every day
it's like a dust cloud from the west
and although i try to do my best
i feel a panic start to grip my chest
it's so frightening and immense

i used to really want to make my mark
to live my life in a dramatic arc
i was bohemian and unkempt
thinking somehow i could be exempt
but now it's clear that nothing i attempt
will matter in the least, twenty years hence

and i'm sure there's a "gift" in this somewhere
i'm sure there's a "lesson" as well
yes i'm sure there's a "gift" in this somewhere
but for now i'm unhappy as hell

i guess i could have lived a more different life
i was never a traditional wife
i maybe should have had a kid or two
or twenty seven like the mormon's do
but most parents will admit it's true
having children is no defense
against Irrelevance

and i'm sure there's a "gift" in this somewhere
a gift all wrapped in dread and defeat
yes i'm sure there's a "gift" in this somewhere
it's so hard to accept it -
i hope somebody kept the receipt
and when that final day rolls around
and they bury me in the ground
i can pretty much guarantee
that when the gods look down on me
they'll all shake their heads and agree
"she did nothing of consequence"

Was für ein schönes melancholisches Gedicht von Susan Werner! (Wahrscheinlich eher ein Liedtext?) Und zwischen den Zeilen ahnt sie doch auch, dass es nicht darauf ankommen kann, etwas für die Ewigkeit zu hinterlassen.
Verzeiht, nun muss ich unseren angestaubten wortgewaltigen Klassiker zitieren:
"Wenn ich zum Augenblick kann sagen: 'Verweile doch, du bist so schön,
es wird die Spur von meinen Erdentagen nicht in Aeonen untergehn!',
dann sollst du meine Seele haben..." - oder so ähnlich jedenfalls.

Aber der alte Faust lässt sich betrügen, übergibt seine Seele dem Teufel, bevor er wirklich "relevant" geworden ist - und Die da Oben hau'n ihn trotzdem raus, irgendetwas ganz anderes zählt da ("a gift, a lesson in this somewhere"?).

Ich lese gerade Rutger Bregmans neues Buch ("Im Grunde gut"), das ich demnächst gerne zur Diskussion oder auch zur gemeinsamen Lektüre vorschlagen würde. Das 3. Kapitel endet so (S. 74 im englischen Text): "Maybe our existence is just a fluke, after millions of years of blind fumbling. But at least we're not alone. We have each other."
